Welcome to the blog for Southern Star Mini Aussies, now also known as Miniature American Shepherds, affectionally called "Wiggle Butts". This is a wonderful breed that is very intelligent, loyal and can be somewhat active and may be reserved with strangers. Many excel in performance events such as herding, agility, disc dog, flyball, dock diving, rally, conformation, and enjoy most being your best buddy. Mini Aussies range in size from 14"-18" top of shoulder and 20-40lbs. The smaller versions are referred to as Toy Aussies. These fur-kids are very much like potato chips and you can't have just one. If you would like to be owned by an Aussie, we would love to talk to you.

Blitz x Reba puppy (CINCO) now known as Ginger:   UPDATE from Family
Just thought I'd pass this picture along of Ginger (registered as "Southern Star Ginger Belle")She is such a beautiful dog, and is quite the head turner: all the staff at our vet's office finds an excuse to come in to see her when she is there for an appointment.

Ginger turned 14 weeks old this past Wednesday, and has doubled in size since we got her from 6 pounds to 12 pounds.  She is loving, energetic, athletic, fearless, and intelligent, and always entertaining: she likes to hoard things--5 pound bags of potatoes, all the spice bottles from the spice rack, shoes, dish towels, newspapers--whatever she can find or steal and stack in the corner.  She torments our 90 pound lab by biting his tail, ears, and everything else, but he takes it in stride and they are becoming good friends.

Hope all is well-

It's been a few days since our last update.  Vet said he was healthy and she fell in love with the little guy. Aksel was 8.1 pounds at the vet last week. I can already tell he's a little bit bigger than last weeks vet visit too.

He is SUPER smart. He already walks the leash very well and is almost completely housebroken - no accidents in a few days.  We also have a sensored dog door and he learned that her can go in and out as he pleases in one night. In addition he already sits, lays, and shakes.  Not sure what to teach him next - probably come and stay are the next two as they are most practical :). He loves learning time.

Here is a picture of him playing tug of war with my roommates dog!  Thank you again for all the information, the help, and my amazing new friend!

Hi Leslie!  Just a quick note to tell you we couldn't be more thrilled with Sydney.  She is literally perfect in every way!!  She is fearless, social, loving, smart and beautiful!  We started puppy classes and she goes to daycare three days a week.  The teacher of her class is a nationally known trainer and used to work in the show rings and she compliments you so highly!  Sydney is the smartest dog in any of her classes and she says it is because you raise your puppies so well.

Dodger now Blaze doing well in his new Home

Hi Leslie!  Just wanted to give you an update on Blaze and how wonderfully he has adjusted to our family.  My daughter carries him around everywhere, and my granddaughter is always giving him kisses.  He is so lovable and sweet.  We have not had any trouble with him at all.  The only 2 accidents he has had can probably really be blamed on the house being so busy with all the kids. You do such a great job getting the puppies ready to go home with families.  Thank you!

1 year Follow Up from Puppy Family

leslie:

wanted you to know how much of a great family member lacy has made for us.  she's gotten pretty brave but her quirky personality still dominates.  shes incredible with the kids.  they lay on her and love on her and i think she may actually enjoy it!  she roams at night and goes upstairs to check on them at least once a night.  she is the first thing they look for in the morning.  she gnaws on austin's head in the morning to get him up for school.

the non pet lover angela loves her as much as anyone.  she get her primped at the groomer at least once a month (lacy hates it).  she takes her for walks around the neighborhood.

as far as me, shes been great.  she sits at my feet while i work at my desk and loves when i include her in my chores around the house. shes very very intelligent and easy to teach.  she just wants to please me.

just wanted you to know she has been the perfect pet for us.

we still talk often about lucifer with our friends and still manage to get a chuckle when discussing her stories.

hope all is well.

Southern Star Buying Experience

Our experience with Southern Star Mini Aussies was a wonderful one and we will definitely be working with Leslie again. When looking for an addition to our family, Leslie knew exactly which pup would be perfect for us. Zoey, previously known as Poinsettia, was exactly what we were looking for. She has become our best friend and a member of our family! We loved the process of working with Leslie, Southern Star Mini Aussies. It was so nice to be able to go to her home and see that she treats all of the new pups as if they were her own. We knew that the first eight weeks of our puppy’s life were great ones. Zoey was well oriented with the way things were done in a home setting and this allowed for her to adapt very well in our home! We really enjoy the way Leslie does things when it comes to breeding. It is not a dog factory, it feels much more sentimental. Not only does it stop at the eight weeks of her taking care of them and getting them ready to come to their new homes, but she has continuously helped us in our transition into pet owners. Thank you Leslie for everything you have done and thank you for giving us the best pup we could ask for! Love, Teresita

Update on Jade, aka "Cricket" from her family

Hi Leslie,

Cricket is doing wonderfully! You are correct about her being 100% fearless! She's been many places with me already, met lots of people, and has been simply golden with all of it. After a few days in Dallas, we just got home tonight, so it was her first time to meet my other dogs. She was bold as can be, instantly greeted them, then went to their food (and ate about three times more than I've ever seen her eat before!) Kira, the BC mix, simply adores her. Cricket was running around like crazy, and Kira followed her around for almost half an hour. Whenever she wanted to get Kira's attention, she would go up and grab Kira's tail and tug it. They lie right next to each other, and Kira almost seems to be watching out for her a lot of the time. Ace, the lab, is more jealousy prone (especially since she started playing with his toy), but he eventually warmed up to her some. And she loves all of the cats.

Housebreaking is going very well, she has never had a single accident indoors! She responds to her name /most/ of the time, and knows sit and down (though we're still working on her staying put for more that a few seconds!) At night, she cries for about 5 minutes when I first put her in the kennel, but then is quiet all the way through the night until about 6. Even with all of her energy, she is an amazingly easy puppy! I have never had a puppy who has been so trouble free the first week! I'll take pictures soon to send you. She's simply precious.

All the best,
Morgan

Kiss aka Gypsy Arrives in Montana

Leslie,
Caption for the photo would be "Good fences make good neighbors". Jake can play rough so we'll see when we think they can be together. We'll supervise some outdoor play later today. But we see she can play rough herself sometimes.
After a good night's sleep for  all, she is so playful and challenging Jake thru the fence this morning. Her appetite is good, and all seems well with her. Still want her to have time to get her bearings, get confident in new surroundings, and over any stress from yesterday's flight.
Both are being goofy as all get out. She will definitely hold her own with the terrier when she just gets a bit bigger. She'll soon be larger than him! Boy won't he be surprised. It's clear they enjoy each other's company.

And what a personality this girls got! Wow! Just a perfect addition to our family.

Thanks again for everything,
Lee

Update on Yahtzee aka Piper (sister to Cash on my site)

Hi there! It has been quite some time since I have updated you about Piper (formerly Yatzee from your kennel). I have had Piper for over 2 years now and she is a wonderful part of our family. Piper and I love to play frisbee and she is really good at it! Rarely does she not catch one and if she does miss it is usually because of a poor throw by me. Whenever we go into the backyard the first thing she does is get her frisbee and run over and drop it at my foot. More recently I have discovered that she loves to play soccer. My mother-in-law ramdomly purchased some plastic balls from Walmart one day and threw them in the backyard for the dogs to play with and now Piper loves to chase and heard the balls all over the yard with her head and nose. It is really funny to watch and she will go non-stop. She really likes when I throw the ball in the air so she can jump up and do a header to hit the ball even higher into the air and then chase it. She will even head the ball right back to you like we are playing catch. Any way just wanted to let you know that all is well and we are having a great time here in Houston. I will try and update more often when I can.

Sincerely,

Robin and Piper

P.S. I have attached a couple of pictures of Piper. One is her jumping up playing soccer and heading the ball and the other is her just looking cute.

ZZ Top Arrives in Vermont

Hi
The puppie arrived last night at our house at midnight.  He slept until the sun got him up and then we let him wake up our daughter.  The have been playing together ever since except for some naps!  I even took him to a playgroup as I did not want to leave him home alone after all that travel.  He was awsome, he loved following the kids around, jumping in the kiddie pool, licking the babies faces.  My four month old son will have the cleanest face in town!  Everyone there loved him. Afterwards, I was able to snap a few pictures before I realized the battery to my camera ran out!
I think he is going to make a wonderful addition to our family!  Thank you!  I will try to send some more pictures.
Thank you
Melissa

Metallica aka "Cricket" Made it Home to Louisiana

Hi Leslie!

Metallica aka Cricket is back home in New Orleans and is an absolute joy! We spent the weekend in Fort Worth for the holiday, and within 24 hours, she was telling us when she needed to go potty, responding to her name, and sleeping like a champ! The first night she slept the entire night without a peep! The next night she would whine for maybe 10 minutes, then slept until she had to go potty at 1 am. I have to agree with Kathy when I say that I think I've somehow killed her when she is quiet in her crate!!! It's too good to be true! I was worried about the 8 hour car ride back to New Orleans on Monday, but she again surprised me. She slept THE WHOLE WAY THERE in her crate, and would go potty when we stopped for gas. This little girl has already brought us so much love and joy, and we can't wait to watch her grow up! Pictures to come soon!

I can never thank you enough for everything you do for these puppies. She is so well adjusted, calm and loving and I truly appreciate all the love and care that went into her first 8 weeks!

Styx aka "Cody" Back Home in New Jersey

Thanks to this wonderful family for flying to Texas just to pick up thier special lil guy....   So, glad he was quiet on the plane !! :)

Hi Leslie.

You were right....Cody deserved the Quiet Traveler Award.  He did
great through the plane ride and both car rides.  The airport was very
quiet.  I was carrying him and had him on my lap so was a little
worried they would say something but they just wanted to take pictures
of him.

He's settling in great, as well.  The biggest challenge is at night.
He's not particularly fond of being confined.  I am putting his food,
treats, etc, in his crate.  He keeps one foot out at all times to keep
his options open.

Last night was the battle of the wills between Cody and 2 of my
daughters.  Luckily they won out but not easily!  During the day he
loves being around us and has been doing great with his
housebreaking.  He is also doing great with my daughter's cat, Mimi.

He goes to the vet's tomorrow just for a quick check and I'd like for
his first visit there to be shot free.

We'll send pictures!

Thanks for starting us off on such a great footing.  It makes all the
difference.

Daughtry at his new Home

Daughtry aka "Tucker"

Tuck is doing amazing! He goes to the door when he needs to potty and we went swimming and he was fearless! He jumped in so many times and chased crow around as well! I think he's going to for in just fine! And he loves his bed ! He backs up and then runs and jumps on it! He's already got a million toys but his favorite is this stuffed shark!  I'll send a pic!
***  Crow is a Southern Star Mini from a last years litter ***

UPDATE 7/1/11 :
He slept the entire night! On his bed right by mine he whined one time and I let him out to potty and he came in got on his bed and went to sleep! He's amazing!

Puppies Started Leaving the Nest Yesterday :(

Kid Rock aka "Quinn" was the first to go, followed by Daughtry aka; "Tucker" this morning...  My camera is not working real well and I missed the pictures of thier departure...
The first follow up letter is in....

Hi, Leslie

Thought you might be wondering how Master Quinn is doing.  First of all...let me thank you for the amazing way you raise your puppies.  This little guy is so well adjusted I'm thinkin' the rest of us might need counseling.  He took to his new surroundings surprisingly well; very quiet last night. Of course my husband wakes naturally about 4:00.  When I realized Quinn had not made a sound at all during the night, I was afraid I had somehow killed him.  No worries, though. He was very sleepy in his kennel and looked at us as if we had some problem with our sight as it was still dark outside. But, when I put him back to bed when Wayne left, he found his inner puppy and let me know he wasn't happy with the situation.  He definitely has good lungs lol... after a bit he quieted down and we all went back to sleep.

He and Sookie are doing well.  She is a little possessive, mostly about Wayne, but we are working through it and they are getting acquainted and beginning to play.  Frankly, I don't think Sookie can decide if she is suppose to defend against him, befriend him or mother him.  I'm sure she will come to the right decision soon.

Thank you for giving us the opportunity to have Quinn in our family. He has already captured our hearts and we can't wait for all the adventures to come.

Kathy

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my little man!  He is still a crazy puppy but his grown-up personality is starting to show and he’s just the sweetest, most laid back dog ever. Other than thunder, nothing rattles him. You only gently have to tell him “no”, when he’s doing something bad.  He just tries so hard to please and is always trying to read us to see what we want. He lets my daughter hug, squeeze and drive him crazy and he is SUCH a Mamma’s boy and follows me around everywhere. I am head over heels in love with him as is my husband, daughter and Tyler!!! He’s perfect for our family. So glad we found him through you!
